| Assam's New AI Software to Protect Local Artisans and Handloom Industry |
Guwahati: The traditional handloom industry is a significant part of the culture and heritage of Assam, a state in northeast India. To support this industry and promote locally-made products, scientists in the state have developed an AI-based software that can differentiate between handmade products and those made using power looms.
This software is being used by government authorities in Assam during raids on businesses to ensure that the ban on power-loomed products is being implemented effectively. The ban on power-loomed products, including Gamosa and Mekhela Sador, came into effect on March 1, and the Assam cabinet has decided to impose a complete ban on the manufacturing and sale of power-loomed traditional handloom textiles in the state. Legal action will be taken against those who violate the ban.
The AI software is user-friendly and can be easily downloaded onto mobile phones. It uses the device's camera to distinguish between handmade and power-loomed products, making it a useful tool for the government authorities to identify and seize any power-loomed products being sold in violation of the ban.
District administrations in Assam have issued notices to vendors prohibiting the sale of power-loomed products procured from outside the state. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged all DCs and SPs to conduct a drive against the sale of power loom items and to speak with the textile merchant association to stop bringing in such items. This initiative is expected to give a boost to the traditional handloom industry of Assam, which has been facing competition from cheaper power-loomed products from other states.
This initiative not only promotes the local industry but also provides a platform for local artisans to showcase their unique craftsmanship. The traditional handloom industry is an important source of livelihood for many people in Assam, and this AI-enabled software is a step towards protecting and preserving this industry for future generations.
