Guwahati: The Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, recently spoke at the state legislative assembly about the government's crackdown on child marriage. He revealed that over 900 charge sheets had been filed in the last month alone as part of this effort. The government has also taken over 4,300 cases of child marriage reported since February 3, and over 1,000 people remain in custody.
The Chief Minister has stated that the government is committed to putting an end to the practice of child marriage in Assam by 2026. To this end, the government has allocated Rs 200 crore in the budget to appoint a special advocate for each child marriage case. The government also plans to take strong action against those who are found to be involved in child marriage. The Chief Minister has stated that the government will launch an operation against child marriage every 2-3 months and will arrest those involved.

The Chief Minister emphasized that when it comes to child marriage, the government will not compromise and will adhere to the law.
The state government has reported a significant increase in the number of arrests made under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act over the years.
