Guwahati: The Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, recently spoke at the state legislative assembly about the government's crackdown on child marriage. He revealed that over 900 charge sheets had been filed in the last month alone as part of this effort. The government has also taken over 4,300 cases of child marriage reported since February 3, and over 1,000 people remain in custody.

The Chief Minister has stated that the government is committed to putting an end to the practice of child marriage in Assam by 2026. To this end, the government has allocated Rs 200 crore in the budget to appoint a special advocate for each child marriage case. The government also plans to take strong action against those who are found to be involved in child marriage. The Chief Minister has stated that the government will launch an operation against child marriage every 2-3 months and will arrest those involved.

The government's commitment to ending child marriage is also reflected in its stance on the punishment for those who engage in the practice. The Chief Minister has stated that the husband of a girl who becomes a mother before the age of 14 will face a jail term of 14 years.

The government is also focused on rehabilitating the victims of child marriage. The government plans to offer scholarships, free schooling, and free rice schemes to support their rehabilitation. The Chief Minister emphasized that when it comes to child marriage, the government will not compromise and will adhere to the law.

The state government has reported a significant increase in the number of arrests made under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act over the years. This indicates that the government is committed to taking action against those who engage in child marriage and related offenses. Overall, the government's efforts to end child marriage in Assam are comprehensive and far-reaching, and demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of children in the state.
