Assam and Meghalaya to Work Towards Resolving Boundary Issues

WA NorthEast: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has announced that official talks with Assam to resolve the remaining six border disputes will begin soon. The two states share a 884-km border, with several areas of contention that have remained unresolved for decades. Both Assam and Meghalaya signed a historic agreement last year in March to resolve their 50-year-old pending boundary issue that involves six out of twelve areas of contention along the border.

Sangma stated that communication had already begun, and efforts would be made to resolve the issue as soon as possible. The talks will commence officially in April or May once the regional committees have finalized the details. Last year, both states introduced a draft resolution to resolve their boundary dispute. The resolution involved the 36.79 square km of disputed land, with Assam retaining 18.51 square km and Meghalaya receiving the remaining 18.28 square km.

The border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya has led to several instances of violence in the past, with both sides accusing each other of encroachment. The agreement signed last year was seen as a significant breakthrough in resolving the issue, and the upcoming talks are expected to build on this progress. The successful resolution of the border dispute is expected to promote peace and stability in the region and encourage economic growth in both states.
