Maharashtra MLA Faces FIRs for Offensive Dog Meat Consumption Comment

Guwahati: Several First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered against Bachchu Kadu, a Maharashtra MLA, after he made a derogatory comment about the consumption of dog meat in Assam during a session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on March 4, 2023.

In response to Kadu's statement, the Kokrajhar District Trinamool Youth Congress filed an FIR against him at the Sapkata Police Outpost on March 7. The complaint was filed by the president of the Kokrajhar District Trinamool Youth Congress, Rahiton Narzary, who described the statement as "completely derogatory and provocative."

Narzary's complaint further stated that the comment not only defamed the Assamese people and their culture, but it also suggested a high demand for stray dogs in Assam, which could lead to cruel treatment of stray animals.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Assam also lodged an FIR against Kadu at the Dispur Police Station in Guwahati, with Amlan Jyoti Hatibaruah, AAP Assam's joint secretary, filing the complaint. Furthermore, an FIR was filed against Kadu by the Assam Youth Trinamool Congress (AYTMC) in Goalpara, with AYTMC president Moniruj Zaman filing the complaint.

Kadu's comment has sparked outrage in Assam, where dog meat is considered taboo and not consumed. The multiple FIRs filed against him reflect the strong sentiment of the people of Assam against promoting dog consumption in the state.

It remains to be seen how Kadu will respond to the FIRs filed against him and what action will be taken by the authorities in Maharashtra and Assam in this regard.
