| Indigenous Peoples' Forum Demands Bifurcation of Dima Hasao into Two Districts |
Guwahati: The Indigenous Peoples' Forum (IPF) is an organization consisting of students from several non-Dimasa ethnic groups such as Biete, Hmar, Kuki, Karbi, Vaiphei, Zeme Naga, Khelma, and others. The IPF has been demanding the bifurcation of Dima Hasao, a hill district in Assam, into two districts for many years. This demand arose after the state government changed the name of the North Cachar Hills to Dima Hasao on April 1, 2010.
On March 23, the IPF organized a massive rally in Haflong city to push for the creation of two separate districts by bifurcating Dima Hasao. Thousands of protesters joined the rally, raising slogans and banners that demanded the state government to take action. They also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, demanding the formation of two separate districts.
The leaders of the IPF allege that despite their long-standing demand, the state government has not taken any steps to create separate districts. They also called for an end to the harassment of the public in the name of PRC verification and for action to be taken against those responsible.
It is worth noting that in 2022, some Dimasa organizations strongly opposed the demand for bifurcating Dima Hasao into two separate districts. However, the IPF's demand for the creation of two separate districts has gained momentum in recent years and has become a crucial issue for many non-Dimasa ethnic groups in Assam.
