WA NorthEast: Conrad Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, has emerged victorious in the South Tura constituency in the state assembly elections, defeating his opponent and BJP leader Bernard Marak. As the leader of the National People's Party (NPP), Sangma expressed his delight in the party's success, but acknowledged that they are still a few seats short of a majority and are awaiting the final results.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) reported that Sangma won with 10,090 votes, while the estimated voter turnout was 49.42%. Currently, the NPP, led by Sangma, has won five seats and is leading in 21 others.

Despite the defeat of Sangma's elder brother James Pangsang K Sangma in the Dadenggre constituency by a slim margin of just seven votes to the Trinamool Congress's Rupa M Marak, Sangma's victory in South Tura is a significant boost for the NPP, which is aiming to form the government in the state for a second term.

The Meghalaya assembly elections have been closely watched, with several key players competing for power. Nonetheless, Sangma's triumph in South Tura is a clear indication of the people's backing for his leadership and the NPP's plans for the state. While the final results are yet to be announced, Sangma's triumph in South Tura bodes well for the NPP's aspirations.
