| Assam to Modernize Infrastructure of 20 Schools with a Budget of Rs 132.86 Crore |
Guwahati: The government of Assam has recently announced plans to upgrade the infrastructure of 20 Higher Secondary Schools in the state under the Prime Minister's Development Initiative for the North East Region (PM-devINE) scheme. This initiative is a central sector scheme with 100% central funding and was announced in the 2022-23 Union Budget. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has allocated a budget of Rs 132.86 crore for the infrastructure upgrades of the 20 schools.
The schools that have been selected for the upgrades are old and have rich histories with strong public involvement. A press release by the government states that "The 20 schools identified for upgrading their infrastructures are very old ones bearing glorious histories and public involvement." The upgrades will be carried out in eight packages, with the Public Works Department having already issued tenders for the development of infrastructure.
The eight packages under which the schools will be upgraded are listed as follows:
Package 1 includes AK HS Institution, North Guwahati; Ambikagiri Balika Vidyalaya HS School, Maligaon; Vidya Mandir HS School, Pandu; and Dadara HS School, Dadara. The cost of Package 1 is Rs 20.81 crore.
Package 2 includes Dharapur HS School; Jalukbari HS School; Rajdhar Bora HS School, Azara; and Arya Vidyapith HS and MP School, Guwahati. The cost of Package 2 is Rs 24.31 crore.
Package 3 includes Sonapur HS School; Nahargurighat HS School, Maloibari; Gopal Boro HS School, Dispur; Dispur Government HS School; and Bhaskar Vidyapith HS School, Guwahati. The cost of Package 3 is Rs 33.24 crore.
Package 4 includes Pati Darrang Vidyapith HS School; Puthimari HS School; and Rangiya HS School. The cost of Package 4 is Rs 23.47 crore.
Package 5 includes Ganesh Mandir HS School, Guwahati. The cost of Package 5 is Rs 5.74 crore.
Package 6 includes Bengali HS School, Paltan Bazar, Guwahati. The cost of Package 6 is Rs 3.73 crore.
Package 7 includes Banikanta Memorial HS School, Guwahati. The cost of Package 7 is Rs 4.06 crore.
Package 8 includes Uparhali HS School, Palasbari. The cost of Package 8 is Rs. 7.23 crore.
The total cost of all the packages amounts to Rs 132.86 crore.
The infrastructure upgrades are in line with the National Education Policy, which emphasizes the importance of improving the quality of education in India. The PM-devINE scheme aims to bring about overall development in the North East Region of the country, which has been relatively neglected in terms of infrastructure development in the past.
Projects worth Rs 1,500 crore are expected to be sanctioned by March 31, under the PM-devINE scheme, which is expected to lead to further infrastructure development in the North East Region.
