Assam Police Bust Gang Supplying Fake QR Codes to Shopkeepers

Guwahati: On March 24, Assam police discovered a group of fraudsters who were providing false QR codes to shopkeepers, traders, and owners of other business establishments in the Abhayapuri region of Bongaigaon district. This was in response to complaints from local traders about widespread fraud related to QR codes. The way this fraud works is that when a customer buys goods from a shopkeeper and makes payment through the QR code, the money goes into the account of the fraudster rather than the account of the shop owner.

The police caught one of the fraudsters, Rakibul Haque, who had given a Paytm QR code to a shopkeeper named Banamali Das. However, Das managed to outsmart the fraudsters and called them to his shop on March 24, pretending there were some issues with the QR code. He then handed them over to the Abhayapuri police.

Two other individuals were also arrested, identified as Rafiqul and Jehangir, and the police seized a bike from them bearing the registration number AS 19 J9246. The police have initiated an investigation to find out if there are any further links to the case.

One of the victims, Banamali Das, recounted his experience to reporters. He had asked Rakibul Hussain for a barcode, and Rakibul had promised to provide it within 10 days. When the barcode was finally provided after 12-13 days, Banamali activated it and discovered that the money was being transferred to Rakibul's account instead of his own. When he called Rakibul to inquire about this, Rakibul asked for forgiveness and promised to clear up the situation. However, after several hours passed with no sign of Rakibul, Banamali went to the police seeking justice.
