| Senior Advocate in Gossaigaon Attacked with Acid by Unidentified Assailants |
Guwahati: A senior advocate in the Gossaigaon area of Assam's Kokrajhar district was the victim of an acid attack on Friday, carried out by unknown assailants who entered his home and threw acid on his face. The victim, identified as Abdus Samad Ahmed, was rushed to RNB Civil Hospital but was later transferred to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital due to his deteriorating health. A case has been registered with the police, and an investigation is underway. The Gossaigaon Lawyer's Association has called for a thorough investigation and strict action against the perpetrators.
This incident is one of many acid attacks in the region, with Assam recording nine cases in 2021, up from two in the previous year. Across the country, 1,362 acid attacks were reported in the last five years, with West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan having the highest number of incidents. The government has issued advisories to all states and union territories to regulate the retail sales of acids and chemicals to prevent their use in crimes.
