| Civilians Killed Near Assam-Arunachal Border in Suspected Rebel Attack |
Assam: On Monday, suspected rebels allegedly opened fire in Tinsukia near the Assam-Arunachal border, killing at least three civilians. The incident occurred in Ledo, between Pheenbhiru and Ringraan Thaan near Jagun.
According to sources, the militants are believed to have carried out the attack in retaliation to a recent gunfight with Assam Police, in which a member of their banned outfit, Uday Asom, was killed on February 8. It is also suspected that the three victims were killed because they were informers for the security forces.
The exact reason behind the attack is yet to be disclosed by the Assam Police. Further details about the incident are still awaited. The area has been cordoned off by the security forces, and an investigation is underway. Attacks on civilians by militants are not uncommon in the northeast region of India, particularly in states such as Assam, where several banned outfits have been operating for decades, seeking autonomy or secession from India.
