6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Flood-Stricken New Zealand

WA International: On Wednesday, New Zealand was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale. The quake occurred at a location around 78 km northwest of Lower Hutt, near Wellington, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The earthquake's epicentre was located 50 km from the town of Paraparaumu. According to Geonet, the government's seismic monitor, the earthquake's tremors were felt at a depth of 48 km (30 miles).

The earthquake struck New Zealand at a time when the country is already grappling with severe flooding. The combination of a flood and an earthquake is a severe threat to the people and infrastructure of the region. The authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions in the event of further aftershocks.
