| Ragging at NIT Silchar: Student Assaulted After Filing FIR Against Seniors |
Guwahati: On April 2, a student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Silchar, Assam was hospitalized after being assaulted by several students. The victim, identified as Siddhant Pathya, is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. The attack occurred after he lodged an FIR against 18 seniors at Ghungoor Police Outpost on March 1 with the help of his family members.
According to the victim, he stayed at the NIT campus on the night of March 25 and parked his car in front of hostel-6. The seniors allegedly damaged the car just to bully him. They then physically assaulted him and broke bottles on his head. The victim's friend, who tried to save him, was also beaten.
Siddhant's mother said that there are severe cuts and injuries on his body. She also alleged that several students thrashed her son brutally and even tried to kill him. She called for action to be taken against the culprits and urged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene.
"When we send our child to institutes for higher education, we rely on the institution, but if the child is being treated in this manner, then how can one think of sending his or her child back to the institution," the victim's mother said while speaking to the media.
The incident has once again highlighted the issue of ragging in educational institutions. It is not the first time that such an incident has occurred at NIT Silchar. In the past, there have been several cases of ragging reported at the institute. The authorities need to take strict action against the culprits to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future. The safety of students should be the top priority of educational institutions.
