West Bengal Government Collaborates with Assam to Provide Power to Border Villages

Guwahati: For a significant period, the inhabitants of three villages situated near the Bengal-Assam boundary have been living without electricity. However, the government of West Bengal has taken measures to rectify this situation, and the villages of Purba Falimari, Chhat Falimari, and Chhit Bara Lalkuthi, which are home to around 10,000 people combined, will soon have access to electricity.

In January, the residents of these villages declared that they would boycott the panchayat elections because of their absence of electricity. As a result, officials from the TMC government visited the villages to reassure the residents that they were making efforts to provide electricity to the region.

Last month, the chief engineer of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) sent a letter to the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), requesting that they purchase power from them to supply electricity to these villages.

This is not the first time that the two government-run companies have collaborated to provide electricity to a border region. In 2017, a similar agreement was reached to supply electricity to a border outpost of the Border Security Force (BSF) in the Cooch Behar district.

The West Bengal government's action is anticipated to bring relief to the inhabitants of these villages, who have been living without access to electricity for an extended period.
