| Peon Arrested for Alleged Gang-rape of Fifth-grade Student at MCD-run School |
WA National: On March 14, a fifth-grade student was allegedly gang-raped by a peon and his three accomplices at a Municipal Corporation of Delhi-run school, according to police reports. The peon, Ajay, who had been working at the school for the previous ten years, was arrested, while efforts were made to apprehend his associates. The Delhi Commission for Women issued a notice to the city police and the MCD regarding the occurrence.
Following the assault, the victim stopped attending school and missed her final exams. The MCD responded by issuing show cause notices to the school's principal and class teacher for their failure to report the incident to higher authorities immediately.
The assault only came to light when the student's teacher inquired about her absence from the exams and was informed of the incident by the victim's brother. The victim was allegedly taken to an undisclosed location from the school, drugged, and raped by the accused and his accomplices, according to the complaint.
The victim received medical attention and counseling at Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital. A case was registered under the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
The Delhi Commission for Women has expressed concern over the incident and called for strict action to be taken against the perpetrators. The DCW Chief, Swati Maliwal, tweeted in Hindi, "If the girl child is not safe even in school then where is she?" The incident highlights the need for a safer environment for children, particularly young girls, to prevent such atrocities.
