WA NorthEast: SpiceJet, one of India's prominent low-cost airlines, has announced the launch of a direct flight service from Delhi to Shillong, according to officials. The airline has started this service to provide better connectivity and convenience to passengers travelling between the two cities. The service will operate on Mondays and Fridays, as per the airline. This move comes after SpiceJet entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Meghalaya government in January to connect the Meghalaya capital with the national capital.
The inaugural flight arrived at the Shillong airport from Delhi on February 24, carrying 18 passengers. The same flight departed with 12 passengers. Government officials, including Transport Department Secretary H Kharmalki and MTC MD KL Nongbri, were present at the airport to welcome the flight. This new service is expected to boost tourism and promote trade in the region by improving connectivity between Delhi and Shillong.
SpiceJet is the third airline to start scheduled flights from Shillong, following Indigo and Alliance Air. The introduction of this service by SpiceJet has come after Fly Big airlines' MoU for the Shillong-Delhi route was withdrawn last year.
